“CLIMATE ACTION IN URBAN INDIA”

The Young Indians is an integral part of CII, a dynamic and influential platform, fosters leadership and entrepreneurship among the youth. Through its various initiatives, Yi aims to empower young individuals to take proactive roles in shaping the future of India. Yi aspires to cultivate leadership skills in young people, strengthen the ecosystem for young entrepreneurs, and bring about reforms that are driven by youth, for the larger good of the country.

The Summit aims to bring together the nation’s youth and engage them in positive climate action to create awareness, educate, and initiate projects towards climate action.

The Summit had participation from 150+ college students across Bangalore and Yi members from various chapters. The event was graced by the presence of Chief guest Ms Preeti Gehlot, IAS, Special Commissioner for Forest, Environment and Climate Change, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike(BBMP).

Ms Preeti Gehlot spoke about the pressing concerns pertaining to the Climate Change changes in Bengaluru which has been seen over years.

She highlighted few of the recent water crisis, urban flooding, urban drought and rise in temperatures and explained few of the factors influencing the issues such as Infrastructure, more heating systems adoption, greenhouse gas emissions, Usage of Coal and fossil fuels, Transportation.

She shared plans which have been adopted by BBMP and is readily available on BBMP website for public. She highlighted how BBMP is gearing to tackle climate change through Bengaluru Climate and resilience action plan and Climate Action Cell.

Ms Sangeetha, Yi Climate Change National Chair addressed the summit with how climate change vertical was formed as a response to some of the critical issues related to environment and sustainability. We are working across with multiple stakeholders involving government, corporates, NGO towards urban afforestation, waste management and restoration of water bodies.

Ramachandra, Coordinator of Energy and Wetlands Research Group (EWRG) & Convener of Environmental Information System (ENVIS) at Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES) IISc; Mr Vikas Brahmavar, Founder Boson Whitewater & Dr Shireesh Pankaj, Vice President R&D, Ashirvad Pipes & Director, Alaxis Research and Technology Centre,

Asia attended as panellist for the session on “Sometimes a flood, sometimes a drought”.

A panel discussion on “Cooler cities in a warming world” by Mr Sudarsan MS Co- Founder & CEO, Albatross Energetics, Dr Manan Bhan ATREE, Fellow in Residence, Dr Kanwal Sujit, Managing Director, Terralive Envirotech and Core Committee Member of IGBC discussed on sustainable cities in the near future.

A certified workshop on Green Jobs was conducted to the college students on how they could see the future of employment in the changing world of climate.
